I feel that the author did this quite well. What I liked was the setting and the spiritualism. Lenna also wants to know how her sister was killed and finds that she was involved with the society. They both go to London to the SÃ©ance society to perform a SÃ©ance to find out who how the founder Mr Volkman died. Lenna Wickes is understudy to a famous medium Vaudeline Dâ€™Allaire, who uses her skills to find out how a person has died.

Set in 1873 and the world of spiritualism this story is right up my street. This is the first book I've read by Sarah Penner although I do have her other book on my kindle. But I soon realised it was this unsettling tension, along with the electricity between the two women battling multiple forces unseen, that propels this story along. At first, I found the enforced detachment with the story protagonist alongside the uncommon intimacy with a character of indeterminate alliances unsettling. The story narrative alternates between the third-person perspective of an at times feisty, sceptical and grieving Lenna Wickes and the first-person perspective of a London Seance Society member. But that was not her only choice regarding story perspective that I found curious.
